In our part of Colorado, some of the best fall color comes from native shrubs. Ribes aureum, the Golden Currant (gold with its bright flowers in May) is probably our most reliable fall color here at Perennial Favorites. No matter the weather, it offers great reds this time of year. It grows just as well in full sun as it does in part shade. Extremely drought tolerant, even in a dry year it provides some fruit for the birds. The dark berries are gone now, harvested by cedar waxwings and robins and other songbirds, but the color lingers.
