Jurassic Park

What to do on a snowy, cold day? Play inside. With plants. Yesterday, with new snow on the ground and arctic air in the…air… I decided to stay inside and create this little tableau. I have friends who are into elaborate fairy gardens–they grow special, tiny plants for them, build structures for them–it’s fascinating. With my recent interest in fossils and dinosaurs, I decided that instead of a fairy garden I could build a dinosaur habitat, complete with tiny dinosaurs!

Miniature gardens have been part of the gardening world for at least 3000 years, when the first classical Chinese gardens were created.  Bonsai is another type of miniature gardening. Rock alpine gardens, terrariums, miniature train landscapes–there are all sorts of ways to enjoy plants on this tiny scale. This morning, when I checked Facebook, I saw that Kelly Grummons, of Timberline Nursery, had posted a picture of a miniature garden populated by Foosks, a new race of tiny human-like creatures. (Do I need to add tiny imaginary human-like creatures?) Very intriguing.

Speaking of Facebook, and maybe this should be its own post, I want to direct you to our Perennial Favorites Facebook page.  When I first started using Facebook I created a personal account and then an account for the business. Some of you have friended/liked both, but if you are confused, like I am, here’s the business link. I’m going to try to post all the stuff about the nursery on this page https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Perennial-Favorites/187165411294499  and if you want to “like” Perennial Favorites, that would be great and you’d get any of the business-only posts.

Meanwhile, it’s still cold, and I need to plan my next dinosaur park.
