We’ve found three nests here so far this summer, but we know that there are at least eight female hummingbirds coming to the feeders, so there are probably more nests to be found. The first picture shows an egg in the nest. Hummingbirds usually lay two eggs. The eggs are so tiny, about the size of a bean!
At the same time we saw the nest with an egg in it, we also found a nest with two babies. When the hummingbirds first hatch they lie in the bottom of the nest with their beaks sticking up so the mom can feed them. As they get a little older they can sit up in the nest. Soon they’ll be so big they’ll be crowding each other and clinging to the side of the tiny nest just before they learn to fly.
