Below is a picture of the Say’s Phoebe nest taken by Alana Thrower this past Thursday. The phoebes built their nest on top of the outside phone bell mounted on our barn. Every time the phone rings, the mother flies off the nest. The babies grow so quickly, they’ll be ready to fly any day now. Just before they fledge they sit on the edge of the nest and look terrified. Their parents call to them in long plaintive “pheeeb, pheeeeeeeb” cries, trying to get them to fly.
The babies are as big as the parents, sometimes they even look bigger, and yet the parents continue to feed them. They catch miller moths by the hundreds to try to satisfy the young ones.
Another photo from Alana, this is an evening grosbeak. They love sunflower seeds!
