Almost everyone who grows vegetables, grows tomatoes. It’s the number one favorite backyard crop. Tomatoes! Fresh tomatoes! Vine ripened tomatoes! Nothing compares. Colorado isn’t the easiest place in the world to get a ripe tomato. We have a short growing season. We have late frosts. We have early frosts! Our night time temperatures are quite cool. It’s challenging.
Our friends Penn and Cord Parmenter have taken this challenge and made getting ripe tomatoes at 8000′ elevation a reality. I was so excited to hear that Penn is now selling seeds of tomatoes that they grow in their garden in Westcliffe, CO. She’s offering a wide selection of open-pollinated tomato seeds. I always order from at least five different seed companies to get the variety that we like to offer at the nursery. I’m so happy to have the Mountain Seed website to buy locally grown and locally adapted seeds. I sent in my order yesterday! Can’t wait to start harvesting this summer!
UPDATE:
I forgot to mention the varieties I’m going to try…I love Sungold tomato and I’m always looking for an open-pollinated version that has the same great taste and is as productive. This year I’m going to grow four other yellow cherry tomatoes from Penn, side by side with it to compare: Golden Grape; Coyote; Galina; and Ildi. It’s going to be a delicious experiment!
