Hummingbird Baby

It’s rare we notice hummingbird babies after they leave the nest. It’s hard to tell them apart from their parents then. But, a few days ago, Merrilee noticed a baby hummingbird hanging out by the grapevine, calling to its mom, begging to be fed. This morning I got the picture.006

That’s the baby, above, all alone, chirping and begging for food. In the two pictures below the baby is on the left, with its mouth open!008 009

Hummingbird mothers generally only feed their babies two to three days after they leave the nest and then chase them off.  The mom teaches them to find bugs and nectar, I guess by example. This is the fourth day that that baby has clung to the grapevine, so I bet its going to be on its own soon.
