The Hummingbirds are Leaving

I almost wrote “the hummingbirds are gone,” but every day I see a few of them, at the flowers in the garden and at the feeder.  A month ago keeping up with the two quart feeders felt like a full-time job, but now they barely make a dent in one feeder.  I change the sugar water every three days to keep it fresh for the migrating birds, but I notice they spend a lot more time at the flowers than they do at the feeder. Agastaches and red salvias are their favorites, and I’m so happy we have a lot of both to keep them happy.

Above is Agastache ‘Rye Pink’ taken last September, and below are Agastache ‘Coronado Gold’ and ‘Rye Pink’ taken a couple of days ago.

I wanted to get a picture of a hummingbird at the salvia below, a type of Salvia darcyi, but in the fall the hummingbirds are a little less tolerant of human-camera interactions.  Every time I raised the camera, the hummer left. You’ll have to take my word for it, they love red salvias! Salvia ‘Furman’s Red’ is another favorites of theirs.
