Succulent Pot Blooming in September

Rosularia is a genus of succulents closely related to Sedum, although many people think they look more like Hens and Chicks (Sempervivum spp.) Generally, like Hens and Chicks, they’re just grown for their foliage, but one of them has really pretty flowers, too.

Rosularia sedoides

The flowers are white with red dots.  Here’s a little closer look:

One of my favorites Orostachys is growing in that same dish garden, Orostachys fimbriata.  Orostachys are sometimes called Duncecaps for the shape of their flowers.  What I like the most about O. fimbriata is its color–kind of a brownish-purple-gray.  It’s a great contrast with the other colors in this pot:

Orostachys are very drought tolerant, but not as winter hardy as most semps.  This one is supposed to be hardy to Zone 5, but mine are all in pots, protected in the winter by a cold frame. Looking at this one today made me want to test it for hardiness, so I’m going to plant it in the garden, near a big rock, and hope for the best!
